I think it is important to keep in contact with mom, dad, siblings. You don't have to shut them out. At least know what is going on with each other. If they cause you a lot of pain, maintain a distance. Depending on what they have caused you, if it is life threatening and very serious (abuse, for example) and you feel better not being around them, then that's fine. However, it sounds to me like it is more like they can be nuisances at times...and all families are like that. I think the best thing to do is try to cultivate a relationship, give it your best shot. However, if that doesn't work out, keep in touch every once in a while and know when to duck out of a conversation/or topics that leads to drama. There is a lot of love and pain in families...there is a lot of open wounds. It is tough but do what you can. It is cliche but it is true that they will be the only people who will be there for you when you truly need them...no matter what. In your case you might just have to space out your visitations/talks with them so you don't get too wrapped up in the drama.
