| Scholarships for a part-time student?
Before you ask: yes, we have calls out to the college's financial aid department. No, they haven't called us back yet. Hence the reason I'm asking. Background: My husband, now 31, went to Purdue to pursue a degree in engineering. He fell into the partying scene, became lazy and ended up droopping out just 1 semester away from graduation. It's in the past and now he wants to return to school soon to get a degree in k-12 education for teaching math. Here are a few numbers for you:- has 61 transferable hours (transcript is official released next month)- will be getting the degree from a state university that offers distance learning and is known accross the region for its teaching college- will be getting about 16-20 from a community college- just paid off $5K from Purdue. Still have $25K from gov't. (I should mention: this loan and our mortgage are our only debt.)Here are my questions (to follow):1) Are there scholarships that will be available for him? Being that he is 1) male entering teaching, 2) going into math (okay so men in math isn't so rare), 3) is non trad and 4) part-time.2) What loans or grants would be available to us with such a large government loan still out? Is this even possible?Basically, any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated. We already know that we won’t get any financial assistance or scholarships from the community college. However, we’re prepared financially for that. ---He will be taking around 6-9 hours each semester, hopefully. With two kids and responsibilities, we're going to need 2 jobs until he starts student teaching (we've saved money for this time). We've saved about $6K forr his college thus far and another $3K for his student teaching. Unfortunately, his tuition is going to be closer to $8/10K. Always fun. Another unfortunate thing is that this school is 90 miles away. The GOOD thing is that it's:- Cheaper than other schools in the area- Tied to our local school district, meaning he's a shoe-in for schools in our district. We've been looking at other colleges, but it's definitely not a happy moment to be told that we'd have to pay closer to $20K. BLAH! My parents MAY help us out, but we'll see. They're in the process of moving to a new house and if the farm does well, we can count a few thousand from them.
