financial aid question?

Okay, for my financial aid letter (not check) It says:estimated total cost of attendance:12,470
then in the schools website awarded section it says this :
This is a summary of your financial aid award package for the selected aid year.

i have been in the semester for 3 weeks now
i was wondering what this all meant how much money am i going to get and when will i be receiving my check?
also- am i only getting the 3000 for the whole school year?
i applied for 2007- 2008 school year, do i have to apply for the fall semester also as in 2008-2009 school year? or is the money i get for the 2007-2008 year for this summer, fall next spring etc?

first of all i found out that i will be getting a check in the mail so you are wrong and you will not be getting best answer even though i know you taught you were.
