question about first aid?

What is a poultice? I have seen a lot of products that are a "poultice" but i never know what one is. Since Dover Saddlery categorizes epsom salt as one, and i have had to put epsom salt in the bucket when my horse had a abscess and we soaked it...but I never knew what it did...just that we were to do it.
is cold hosing the same thing?
