Dog and cat urine? Need to help a friend!!!? My friend just inherited a new home. The lady that lived there before her had many animals living inside and she was to old to take care of them . So naturally they urinated all over everything. We have tried everything to get the smell out. Cleaned with bleach and other expensive pet odor cleaners and nothing has worked so far. It has only gotten a little better. Does anyone know how to get that awful smell out of her home. Its really sickening and I am afraid if her family moves into the home without getting that smell out of there they will get sick. WE have taken up the carpet and flooring and cleaned the wood like crazy but its soaked in . What do we do?

Take out the carpet and padding! Replace with new! If it is really bad, then the floors will need to be replaced as well if it has seeped into the wood.... To get the smells out of the walls.....use hot water, dawn dish soap, and vinegar mixture...! It really works to get out all odors.

I would think you would have to change all the carpets, because the smell is in the pad underneath where you cannot clean. All of the hard surface should be able to be cleaned. Open the windows in the house. I would change any cloth items (ie curtains). Good luck!

| If it has saturated the wood under the carpeting (which it probably has) there is really no hope except time. There are products that you can get at Pet Smart that will 'mask' the odor but will not actually remove it.

I just heard about this method recently and It does work. Go buy a new car tire, one that will fit your car so you can use it later. Put it in the room the odor is in, close all doors and windows. The rubber will absorb the odor.

It really could take a lot of work, cleaning up and down, shampooing carpets and floors, probably new paint, if it's carpet and the shampooing doesn't work, might need a new carpet or to put laminite or hard wood down.. you'll pretty much have to re-do a lot of the stuff, if you can crack the windows for a few days that should help also.
