What did he mean when he said this?

In short, a guy friend of mine last night told me that he likes me. I do not return this feeling, and I told him this. He asked if I liked someone else, and I said yes. The person I like is a guy I met through him, and have gotten along well with, at times thinking maybe he did like me too. Last night, he asked if he knew him, I didn't really want to tell him who I liked when I just rejected him, so I said nothing. He asked if his name started with an A (which it does), and I also said nothing, as if I did it would be obvious. He kept it up (I am sure he knows who it is, but I haven't actually said), and said "Oh I hope I'm wrong". What do you think he meant?

He means he's hope that he's wrong about you liking this guy. Even though he knows he is. It obviously upsets him because he likes you.

They might be friends and it obviuosly affects his ego!! guys are like that...

I think he feels that he cant have you anymore therefore; he is trying to make you feel like you are wrong for liking that person. If they are friends probably he knows a lot of things about that other guy (his name with an A) that he has maybe done in other relationships. But maybe je is just saying it to bother you and making you feel bad for you decision on who to like, and trying to say "You are leaving for him?!?!? you dont know what you are getting self into" This also kinda shows how he doesnt want to have his ego beaten up by you, its like a defense mechanism.
