Is my friend worth it? What should I do?? PLEASE help!?

All right, well, I have a "best friend" who's kinda on and off. We never used to have problems, and when we did we'd work them out because we both knew we cared, but ever since last year when we got together and broke up they came up. He got a crush on another girl, and when they started going out, he apparently spread it around school that we'd broken up and he was now dating someone older. Eventually we forgave and became best friends again, and then he broke up with his girl and I have him back, but ever since all that it's like everything's changed. Now there are times when I feel mad and sad and like I want to end it because I'm left out with him and other friends, but then sometimes we'll spend time alone, and he'll be really nice. Like he'll say he's there for me and everything, but he told me that once he talked about me behind my back with his girlfriend when they were together, although he said he wanted to kill her.

Okay, so I don't know what to do now, because he either gets really defensive or ignores it when I voice my feelings, but we used to be sooooo close. He would sit with me at lunch every day and we'd talk online all the time until really late. But that was when he had a crush on me! I also feel like we're drifting apart a little lately, and I want to go to my counselor cuz she'd get this solved, but I really don't know and I miss him and those old times.

But how can I tell him if he won't listen?? Please help me, and no rude comments, okay? Thanks!
