Please help! I messed up my friends computer re-installing windows vista! YIKES!?

I put in the windows vista anytime upgrade disc and now his computer is completely screwed up. I found all his files (documents, music, favorites, etc.) on the c:drive under "windows.old". But when we turn his laptop on now, none of his settings are in place (his homepage, desktop, etc.......) Is there anyway to get this back to normal? I tried system restore, but the only date/time available is from when I did it, and it won't let me pick an earlier date. I feel terrible and would appreciate some help. Let me know if there is any other information I can give you. I'm obviously not very computer savvy! Thanks so much!
