My cell phone and friends cell phone won't work through bluetooth. why?

My cell phone and friends cell phone won't work through bluetooth. why?

I have a Motorola RAZR v3m and he has a sony Ericsson. I have verizon and he has at & t. I can pick up other cellular bluetooth devices of other brands and carriers, and I know how to turn on my bluetooth and his is always on.
