How do you help a friend who is greiving when they dont want to talk?

My friend he just lost someone really important to him, and i really care about him but he's been completely numb for the last two weeks and doesnt want to talk about it. Im so worried for him and sad for him, i hate seeing him like this, it hurts me too. How can i help him feel better? please i reallly really want to help him so bad, i mean to be honest i love him, i really care about him. please someone tell me how to help him....im so worried.
oh right he lives in a different state than i do and he's too far away for me to go and see him so ic ant even hug him...
