In an attempt to explain away this obvious contradiction, many apologists now claim that the genealogy listed in Matthew belongs to Joseph, and the genealogy listed in Luke belongs to Mary, and is only attributed to Joseph because women weren’t important enough to be listed.
Now if the genealogy in Matthew is for Joseph, and the genealogy in Luke is for Mary, that would make Joseph 240 years older than Mary.
If Mary was born today, Joseph would be 21 years older than George Washington.
If you put the four missing generations back in to Matthews genealogy, that’s still a difference of 176 years, which would mean if Mary was born today Joseph would’ve been born back when Andrew Jackson was the president, and he would currently be the oldest living person on the planet.
Either the Bible is full of crap, or Joseph was much, much older than Mary. |
