Why do the Mormons have a free genealogy site?

Johny-- close, but not quite. We do baptisms for the dead because we believe baptism is necessary to get into Heaven. So we baptize those who were not able to be baptized in life by proxy.

It's important to us because we consider family to be important, and we consider it important that everyone know their history and where they came from. Family history can be really cool. So we'd rather give that service to people freely-- what's the point of making people pay? Plus many LDS members can find their ancestors that way and do baptisms for the dead and temple work for them if necessary.

Because genealogy is important to them. The church encourages its members to find out about their ancestors. Personally, I find the website fascinating.

The mormons believe in the practice of the Baptism for the Dead... which is an UNCHRISTIAN practice and belief.

Below is an article that explains what it is, but briefly, it means that if someone has not chosen to believe DURING THEIR LIFETIME, they can be baptized AFTER they are deceased, and thereby saved to be resurrected. There is NO Biblical support for this practice, and is one of the reasons why mormonism is NOT a Christian denomination. (yeah, here we go with the thumbs down... again!)

Scripture clearly states that the choice to believe, and be baptized, is something the person has DURING THEIR LIFETIME ON EARTH. I mean, c'mon now... THINK about it for a minute. If you are a CONFIRMED ATHEIST... you die... everything is "fine" with you, right? You CHOSE to not believe in God.... PERIOD... NOW and for ETERNITY, right?

Well.... along comes some mormon... related to you or not... after you have died... and sees that you were never baptized in the mormon religion. "OH MY!" they say, "WE have to SAVE him/her!" So they proceed with a baptism for YOU so that YOU can be SAVED in the afterlife! Well... doesn't that go against ALL CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE of FREE-WILL? What CHOICE did YOU have in this matter? You're DEAD... you have NO CHOICE... no FREE WILL. You think this is RIGHT? You think this is FAIR?

Just think of Madelyn Murray O'Hair. She was a VERY "confirmed" Atheist, and a very VOCAL one, too. One of her children became a Born-Again Christian, MUCH to HER HORROR! She even DENOUNCED and DISOWNED him during her lifetime. She is now deceased. Now... although this son is NOT of the mormon religion, what if he was? Or what if your "average friendly neighborhood mormon" comes along, sees that Madelyn Murray O'Hair was never baptized in the mormon religion... and goes ahead a baptizes her now that she's dead? Do you really think Madelyn is happy about this? Do you think GOD is happy about this? God has told us from DAY ONE that we have a CHOICE... each individual one of us. If the mormons are baptizing the dead, that takes away that choice that GOD has given each one of us. IT IS NOT A CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE OR PRACTICE.

NOW do you folks comprehend at least ONE of the reasons WHY the mormons are NOT Christians?
