Why do the Mormons have a free genealogy site?

Why is this so important to them? apparently they have collected and stored the details of over two billion people!!

I once read somewhere that they 'convert' the dead - that is to say, all the names on their genealogy site.

Don't remember where I read it - maybe someone can confirm that for me?

You can go the church on certain days and do genealogy, no matter what religion you are. I personally think it's just interesting to learn about one's family history, don't you?

We believe in baptism for the dead, Doing genealogy is important so that we can look up our family history and see who has not been baptized.

Old Time Too is exactly right. Our ancestors can choose to accept the covenants if they choose to. So, there is still free agency after we die to an extent.

Go to http://www.familysearch.org and click on
Why family history.

Addendum: "...Church members make covenants in temples in behalf of their ancestors, who may accept these covenants, if they so choose, in the spirit world."

Key words - if they so choose.

.So they can do there family history and genealogy .We learn from our ancestors. We also give the opportunity to people who did not have choice in this life To be baptized by proxies

All of Corinthians 15 Chapter speaks of baptism of the dead

1 cor.15 : 29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

Actually its more than two billion.

I compiled my genealogy and I love to share it with people! I am always finding long lost cousins, this way, and thus, I learn even more!

I think it is a human longing and instinct to want to know your people--and it is a crime that some websites charge beaucoup so that you can find YOUR own family.

Ours is free--and accurate, for the most part. Who would complain?
