I started my free research through rootsweb.com...they have lots of message boards. Also check out Cyndislist (this has been around a LONG time) and consists of links to everything you can think of concerning genealogy. Also the LDS is a good place to look up a few census records and browse their holdings. Oh and last but not least check out gedcoms (at Worldconnect through rootsweb) which are databases of peoples families. You can do a search for an individual and see if someone else is also researching that particular person!

You're actually very lucky with Canadian genealogy because the Canadian 1901, 1911, and 1906 censuses are available free at this site: http://automatedgenealogy.com/ I have also found the following site useful for Canadian genealogy for specific stuff such as some passenger lists and World War One soldier searches: http://collectionscanada.gc.ca/ http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/cef/001042-100.01-e.php If you have ancestors originally from the UK, you might find their migration record on this site: http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action?redef=0 Hope this helps. |

free geneaology sites are difficult, since the paid sites have the best information. you should go your libary, where chances are you'd be able to use one or more of the paid sites for free - ancestry.com, worldvitalrecords, newspaper to search for obits, etc. with a thumb drive, you can easily download the information & documents - census, manifests, military records, etc - so you can store it on your own computer & all for free. LDs has records for free or at least REALLY cheap - www.familysearch.org/ purely Canadian sites? i'd start here - http://www.islandnet.com/~jveinot/cghl/cghl.html http://www.canadiangenealogy.net/ http://www.genealogylinks.net/canada/index.html also don't forget message boards - you should be able to find some devoted to locations such as Canada or your particular providence. try rootsweb or ancestry's location boards. good luck. ~~~ morgannia |
