genealogy comes from a greek word genealogia, (genea, meaning race/ generation.) so genealogy is the study of history of families and the line of decent from their ancestors.

It's your family's history. Right now I'm trying to find out more about my Grandfather's family. He was born in Italy and immagrated here when he was a young boy. It's not easy to research this though. But, there are hundreds if not thousands of websites out there to help you with this if you are interested in doing this yourself. Some are free, but most charge something for their services. I'm still trying to use the free ones right now. And not getting anything useful!
