a levee is a raised mound on either side of the river which has been laid down due to the deposition of alluvial material. They can usually act as flood barriers. For this reason they can also be manmade as a flood precautionary method.

A levee is a natural or artificial slope along the side of a river. They are formed naturally when a river deposits its sediments (little bits of soil, minerals and pebbles that it carries) along its banks and this builds up after time, raising the level of the ground.

Its purpose is to reinforce banks and help stop flooding, this is why the artificial ones are built. If you want examples the best are in New Orleans or in the Netherlands (levees there are called dikes).

- an embankment that is built in order to prevent a river from overflowing

a man-made levee is called a man-made levee, i don't think there is an alternative
