| just finished 3rd year of college and still don't have major?
so i've just finished my 3rd year of college and still don't know what i would like to major in or do with my life. i have such varied interests but none of them do i see myself dedicating my life to. i thought surely by now i would have made a decision but i have not. i've read self help books, made lists, taken career tests but still no answers. some of my interests are art, design, geography, astronomy, and animals, but each one comes and goes and i don't see myself with a job in any of them. i start my 4th year in a couple months and don't know what to do.

i'm in the same boat man. except i only completed 2 years. take something you think is a mixture of something you'd LIKE to do and will pay because most people don't even wind up in the fields they went to school for and work is work. a degree really is a backup

Geez, get more practical here, ya got to have an occupation. Where are the occupations-----JOB FAIRS----so at least you can factor in the city, company benefit package, etc into criteria of your future wants. That should narrow it down some, So study whats out there, cause the world ain't your oyster, these companies want specific background skills from their candidates. Study which companies appeal to you, which position has the salary, benefits, city. Get the address of the comapny head hunter and ask further questions. Ok, its going to get real on you soooon, so are the real world bills and paybacks.

First of all, don't feel bad about this because you are not alone. Most people do not have any idea what it is they want to do in life and figure that something will come up while they are in college. Well, it doesn't always happen that way.My first suggestion is to look at what area of study you have the most credits and maybe get a degree in that. It doesn't lock you in to anything; it just allows you to get out of college to do some major soul searching. The other option is to get a degree in Liberal Studies which gives you a varied background in a bit of everything. Some employers love that you have this degree because it gives them an opportunity to sort of mold you into the job.Mostly, my advice to you is to stop trying so hard and just keep working to finsih your degree at this point. You do not have to know what it is you want to do with the rest of your life. A very few percentage of people know exactly what it is they want to be when they grow up, but most of us do not really have any idea. Take classes in what interests you and do not be frustrated if you later decide you don't like that subject anymore. We as a society are too hard on people like you and I because they expect us to pick a career right away and go for it. It doesn't work that way.Follow your heart-listen to your heart-don't follow "should", "would", "could" or any of those because you are you. In fact, you are special because there isn't another person just like you. You are you and that means that however your mind and body work are special to only you.Basically, after I have written you a novel, is to be easy on yourself, let yourself enjoy the gift of going to college and learning what it is that you find of interest. Even if you don't decide on a major other than Liberal Studies, than that is just fine. Let your heart and soul speak to you and be open to hearing their messages.Good luck to you-be good to you-and above all, smile because you are unique no matter what it is you decide.

i am in the exact same situation. what i did was just look through the majors offered at my school to see what i could just finish to get it over with. just get undergrad over with. then see what happens. all of my major switches included--fashion design, fine arts, glass blowing, geology, biology, community health ed, earth science, and conservation. i finally just decided to do whatever will get me out soonest==art history. after that, well try to work in that field for a year or so. if you love it, stay with it. if not you could probably still go to graduate school for any other field you've been interested in durring undergrad.good luck
