For health care workers who smoke: How can you care for someone else's health issues

. . .? . . . when you don't care about your own health?
Richard S, the issue is addiction, not perfection, and yes, I've enjoyed all you mentioned, but since you raise the issue, how can an addict truly focus on the needs of others when, by definition, their addiction is their focus?

How can you say that said healthcare worker doesn't care about their own health? It's a safe assumption that you're a non-smoker.... but I bet you have some vices. Ever had a steak? Or been to McDonalds? Or drank coffee, or Coca Cola? I bet you've at least tried alcohol.

Health care workers and/or doctors who smoke are simply living proof that no-one is perfect.

Edit: "By definition, their addiction is their focus" - nonsense. Simply, nonsense. By that logic, someone with an addiction (which I think would encompass the large majority of the population) act solely to get their next 'fix'. This may be true for heroin addicts and coke-heads, but you've clearly never smoked cigarettes and have no idea what you're talking about.
Around 75% of the medical students I know, binge-drink on perhaps a bi-weekly basis. By which, I mean they drink until violently ill. Some of the remaining 25% are pretty much unable to function in a morning before their cup of coffee. There are risks involved in, not only succumbing to an addiction, but to everything and I think you'd agree that doctors and such are best suited to make educated decisions regarding these risks, concerning their own lives and lifestyles.
Some pro-athletes die of heart attacks before they're 20. Some smokers live to be over 100.
