Disease(s) of the Heart???

Salam,
Can anyone explain to me the basis of the diseases of the heart? I mean diseases as referred to in the Quran:

In their hearts is a disease; and Allah has increased their disease: And grievous is the penalty they (incur), because they are false (to themselves). (1:10)

What is the cause of such a disease and how can one pruify their heart? Please keep in mind that i'm not referring to heart diseases of the literal sense, i'm speaking in the Islamic sense. JazakumAllahu Khayr
