The Heart of America is diseased with stress?

Do you think the collective mentality of end-of-the-world speculation actually could contribute to the ruin of America as a World Power? It's very popular to attribute America's "downfall" to growing atheism, acceptance of other religions, and questioning the literal interpretations of the Bible within evangelical Christian franchises...but could it be the other way around? Could the fear-flinging and the rumor-mongering that is the Life's Blood of end-of-the-world specualtion actually be destroying our chances at internal cohesion?
