| Why shouldn't college education be free for all Americans pursuing a degree? I have yet to come up with a reasonable answer. More access to college and advanced specialities to everyone, especially lower income families, would give everyone the chance to make it in life, and greatly improve the economy. Education has been shown to reduce crime, improve neighborhoods, and provide a better quality life for not just those receiving it, but their neighbors and communities as well. Oh yeah, I forgot that people with a college education will think it is a free ride and not get a high-paying job once they get their degree. They rather sit at home with their degree. Silly me for considering this. Umm, do you understand if it was free for everyone, then you wouldn't have to pay for your two kids to go to college? Maybe you overlooked that one. Also, once people have the access to education and use it to pursue jobs that greatly contribute to the economy, they can then pay taxes to fund the education more easily. Ok, if you fail your courses because you think it is a free ride, then you would fail out of college, and the government aide would cease. Make sense? If we end the cycle of students graduating with massive debts or not being able to go to college in the first place, then the whole issue of "I had to work hard to pay for college and so should you" would end. Also, why is going to college a privelage? Everyone deserves the same shot at life right? So rich people can afford for their kids to go to college and poor families can't send their kids to college? That would not be equal rights for everyone. Scorch- financial aid has been decreasing steadily for a while, and now it is not sufficient for many to go to college. Why is it unacceptable for full funding? I am not saying the government should pay for your living expenses and other benefits, just the cost of tuition. Also, different from Europe, I am suggesting everyone gets the CHANCE to do well in college. If you fail your classes, the college has the right to fail you out and you no longer receive any assistance from the government. This will weed out those who don't take it seriously, and allow for all the possibilities for those who do take it seriously. Then, the higher educational attainment will result in higher wages, production, and a more effective economy, which will eventually outweigh the effects of the initial tax hike over the next few years. |
