| Did Fukuzawa Yukichi Support the 1890 Imperial Rescript on Education? I know that Fukuzawa Yukichi sparked the period of Japanese Civilization and Enlightenment in the 1870s (known as the bunmei kaika era) and did not support the Meiji government's Education Ordinances in the 1880s because the various reforms injected Confucianism back into the education system. However, did Fukuzawa support the 1890 Imperial Education Rescript? My history professor stated that Fukuzawa shifted from a "'pro-Western liberal to an avid nationalist". When did this change take place and does this mean he supported the 1890 Imperial Rescript? |
