Are single mothers with no education out-of-luck career wise?

I am feeling pretty low. I'm turning 25 this year and I feel like I have done very little with my life. I have a 5-year old son. A high-school education and a dead-end job.

Back in High School, I wanted to either join the Military or become a Nurse. I had a lot of dreams. I found out I was pregnant during my last semester. I decided to keep him a become a single mother. My life has never really been on track since...

I've worked a series of dead-end jobs and found nothing I like or nothing that is good for my schedule. I'm a Nurse's Assistant now and I hate it, but it is Mon. to Fri. and I have time everyday to spend with my son. I liked waiting tables, but I hardly ever saw my son. My parents usually took care of him.

I have no idea what job I want for the rest of my life. I don't want to be unhappy like this forever. Whatever the job is, I have to be able to train for it quickly. I don't have the time or money to go to college for more than a few months. The tuition wouldn't be a problem- I could get help with that, it is things like gas money, not as much time working, getting to class...etc that are the problem. I'm also not willing to sacrifice time away from my son.

I don't really like the medical industry. I don't really like administrative work. I like food service, but the hours aren't compatible with me. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Take online classes at a school like the Art Institute. You only have to sign in four days out of the week on your own schedule, which means you can do so after your child goes to bed. I understand what you are going through. Most days, it's difficult just to get dinner cooked and baths finished. Doing this will make you feel good about yourself and will also serve as a welcome distraction to your everyday stresses, especially if you do something you are interested in. It's tough now, but he will grow up fast and you'll wish you could be right back here again. Trust me.
