What education or training is required to become an optometrist?

Right now, I've been thinking about becoming a optometrist. As of now, I applied to local/community colleges (CUNY) in NYC b/c I want to improve my grades to transfer out later on as my stepping stone since I have low passing grades from high school. What courses should I take during college before going to opt. school? Does anyone know what education or training is required to become an optometrist? Also, how much does tuition usually cost? How many years of residency do you need after college? Does anyone know any good schools in NY state? Please and Thank You! I really appreciate it. :]

Take all your sciences and maths.
An optometrist is usually a four year degree program.
Tuition depends upon the university.
An optometrist doesn't need a residency - that would be for an opthamologist, a doctor who would then specialize in the eyes.
Make sure you know the differences between them before you proceed further.
Actually, either of them is really a great field to get into, but you will need very high marks going in. Competition is fierce.
Good luck.

Optometry is a post grad degree. Get your bachelors in anything (taking a standard pre med sequence would probably be helpful - the CC you are at will know what that is) and go to optometry school. Transfer to a 4 year school when you have finished your associates.

I am not sure of cost - I suspect about $50k. That's why going to a CC first is a good idea - it will save you money that can be put towards post grad studies.

Best of luck

Thanks
Bill

Usually pre-med or biology, then optometry school.
