| Definitely sex education, because it's been shown over and over and over again ... preaching abstinence simply doesn't work! Teenagers are going to have sex regardless of what adults say they should do. That's just a fact. I'd rather they have all the facts they need in order to keep themselves protected against pregnancy and disease. Teenage pregnancy shatters lives and futures, and is a huge contributing factor to poverty. Sexually-transmitted diseases can cause future infertility and in some cases, death. Of course, in a dream world, all kids would abstain from sex until they're old enough to handle the consequences ... meaning, financially secure enough and emotionally mature enough to raise a child if a pregnancy results, and willing and able to protect themselves against disease and unsafe sexual practices. But they don't ... so I feel that it is smarter by far to give them the information, BIRTH CONTROL, and CONDOMS that will keep them safe. Sex education, by the way, should begin LONG before teenage sex becomes an issue. I think age 8 or 9 is about right. |
