Police history buffs! What kind of arms would a 1940/50 era officer have at his...

What sort of arms did an officer of this era have at his disposal?
Caliber and maker, if you please! Pistols, shot guns, revolvers?

Thanks!

raviet31 has a spectacular aura about
typically a .38 caliber revolver with 5 shots. However, some agencies had access to thompson sub machine guns, aka the tommy gun, but that was limited to large departments or federal agencies and was probably a few years earlier than what you are looking for.

As for a semi-automatic pistol you would probably be looking at the colt 1911 .45 acp.
