Advice on differentiating Jazz Styles?

I am in a History of Jazz class this summer. On the midterm and final, we'll be asked to differentiate between certain stylistic periods. Can you give me advice as to how to aurally identify early jazz, swing, bebop, and cool jazz distinctively from one another? What should instantly trigger an association between a cut and period for each?Note: I am not a music major. My knowledge is rather limited in this field. The "dummies" version would be preferred, as long as it helps me understand, I don't care how silly it sounds
