...HENRY II AND ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY I really need help for my essay! its only for a suprising 200 words but the question is really hard.i need to know why disputes developed between King Henry II and Thomas Beckett, the archbishop of Canterbury in the medieval times. i also need to know the background of the real life story/ situation too please. 10 POINTS FOR THE PERSON WITH GENUINE ANSWERS! The dispute was about whether misbehaving priests should be subject to Common Law (overseen by the King) or Ecclesiastical Law (overseen by the Archbishop of Canterbury). Becket was Chancellor and a close friend of Henry II. The King appointed him as Archbishop of Canterbury so he could win the "my Court is better than yours" argument. However, as soon as he was in the job, Becket changed sides.
