My BF's ex wife has history of mental illness?

My bf's ex wife has a history of mental illness. I'm not sure exactly what she had been actually diagnosed with. I know she was institutionalized a few times over the years before she got married. Her side of the family also has a serious pattern of suicide. One of her brothers commited suicide, now another member of their family, and another brother and her have attempted suicide. My question is, what are the chance's his 2 kids 9 &13 will have mental illness issues? How would we know? What does a parent look for? The youngest (daughter) lives with her mom, out of state, so we don't see her very much. We're afraid of the influence she is under with her mom. She steals, lies , cheats and is very manipulative. Her mother is even worse. I'm worried the kids are going to have these triats and problems.
The terms I used to describe is ex are literal not just words. She has been caught shoplifting with her daughter. She got pregnant with another man's child while married, and is constantly caught lying and being manipulative. I've met her and have seen her crazy (again literally) behavior.How my BF isn't crazy after being with her, is an absolute miracle.
