I never understood this Fresh Prince joke from the first season Christmas episode?

Ashley told Will that Santa wasn't real, and Will said "Ashley, there is no Milli Vanilli, but there is definitely a Santa Claus". I know Milli Vanilli is a singer in the 80s, but I never understood the joke.
