| The Yom Kippur War was historically significant because it was the War to finish all wars with the Egyptians. That was the War to make Sadat understand that Israel was invincible. Egypt had lost already three wars of aggression against Israel with the purpose to push the Jews to the sea. The fourth would be Yom Kippur, and he was sure 99 percent that he would definitely reach his goal. That was for Sadat the most disappointing factor of his life. He never really recovered Psychologically. If America had not interfered, Israel would have destroyed Egypt to take at least another 50 years to recover. |

| First Israeli-Arab war where the Arabs actually 'fought'. Up until the Yom Kippur war the Israelis and the World felt the Arabs were weak; they had always turned and fled under Israeli attack. That was the biggest significance of the war. The Israelis (in some ways) were close to defeat, however, the World quickly sent aid to Israel (the Soviets sent to the Arabs) and stabilized the situation. It led to a different way of thinking by both the Israelis and the Arab Countries. The historic aspect is that the Arabs found a new pride, there were more militant groups believing they can defeat Israel. Interestingly, Sadat never really intended to defeat Israel, merely wanted a better position for Egypt in negotiating a peace deal. It was the Six day war where Israel struck pre-emptively, after the Arabs pretty much said they would be attacking. Sadat had no intentions of pushing Israel 'into the sea'. He is the one who ordered his forces to halt their attack and dig in (for negotiating purposes). Course he never thought the Israelis (where Ariel Sharon made his mark on history) would go around and invade Egypt. |
