Why is corn syrup not kosher for passover?

Why is corn syrup not kosher for passover?

I'm a conservative Jew who is in college. I'm still living in the dorms and finding Passover INCREDIBLY difficult to keep when you don't have a kitchen to make your own food (our dining halls have matzoh, but that's it... I don't even know if the matzoh is kosher for passover)

All I've been eating is the bare minimums: leftovers from my family's seder, matzoh, chocolate covered matzoh, etc.

I really want to broaden what I can eat, at least this year because I'm so limited as to what I can fix myself...

So my question is why can't I eat corn syrup? I don't understand how corn syrup figures into leavened bread
