Christmas lights-How does someone put lights on a Christmas tree and get...

My family has one of those 7 foot Martha Stewart trees that turns when you turn the tree on, it already has lights on it when we bought it, I don't remember the date and year when it was bought because it has been so long, any our tree is not one of those real trees, my dad says getting a real tree is too much trouble, anyhow
how does someone put lights on a Christmas tree, do they just glue them of duct tape them to the tree or What, I live in Chicago and last year me and my mom's friend were doing Christmas shopping and we went to daily plaza that is on 95th in Western and you know when the holidays start they always have like hundreds of Christmas trees on display, well I have noticed some trees have no lights on them at all just decorations and a lot of them were decorated with different ornaments, I didn't know that trees can be decorated a thousand different ways, anyway how do those lights go on a Christmas tree?
