The holiday is minor in Israel but American Jews, in our desire to counteract the lure of Xmas, have added extensive gift-giving, decoration of the house, and the sense of an extra special holiday. during Hanukkah: eat and be merry. linger over your meals and join in jest and song and tales of miracles.
Buy yourself a menorahh each light should burn for at least 30 minutes. Set the menora where all can see it.
place the 8 light in a straight row, since no day is superior to another.Only the shamash the kindle and guardian stands above all of his brothers.
Kindle the lights before any member of the home goes to sleep.
Light the shamash and say the blessings .
Kindle the first light on the left ; move to the right.( the candles shall be placed from the right but lit from the left) Add your usual contributions to your charity box .
*The story so-called the miracle the vial of oil that burned for 8 days is in the Talmud (Shabbat 21b) Each candle represents one night that the oil lasted 8 nights plus 1 shamash -to lite The hymn MAAZ TZUR, Rock of Ages, is of medieval origin. The prayer Hanerot Halalu, " These candles which we kindle"

Hanukah candles have meaning as a whole (as representing the miracle), not individually. You are probably confusing them with Kwanzaa candles which have a different concept for each candle/night.
