No, Home schooled children must pass the same standardized tests that other schools teach to. There is also monthly monitoring and other checks to ensure that the home schooled child is getting an education rather than just watching TV all day. The parents that were locked up were probably not following the curicuulum and not doing their job.

Should parents of home schooled children, be required to have teaching credentials?

Because here in CA recently a case went to the appellate court and the court locked up the parents because they were home schooling their kids.
Just curious on your thoughts
BTW thank you everyone for your time.

I just read about this this morning. I am all for "home schooling". Here in Michigan those that are home schooled have to meet certain criteria and standards. There is also a big group of all the "home schooled" that do get together for things to discuss, and interact with each other. Furthermore, any "home schooled" student can sign up for sports or other curricular activities at their local school. Those parents who attempt and do the actual home schooling, I feel, tend to be more educated, and have more interest in their child's learning activities. Thus the reason for them wanting to home school. Obviously they see the learning environment in their local school system, well not to be desired from their expectations of the educational system.

No.
If the kids aren't testing on par with their schoolmates, the parents should have to submit their child to developmental/cognitive testing to see if there is a learning disability. If not, the parents should lose the right to home school if the kid continues to test poorly.

But having toured a couple of public schools in the nearby urban area, I find it hard to believe a home-schooled kid would test worse than these kids. These schools are out of control circuses, not places of learning. Very sad.
