Well, I agree that there are a 120 possible combinations because the permutation for this is (5!), but to give someone homework and expect them to actually work out these 120 combinations is beyond insane, what a complete waste of time. Well, the only tip I can give you is to set the 'fixed' point about one letter from each colour and arrange everything with respect to it, and then go onto another letter and do the same etc...

Are you sure you weren't just supposed to come up with the answer, which is 120?Best idea is to change one colour at a time at the end. Maybe try using Excel to do this? Best of luck!

R=red, O=orange, Y=yellow, B=blue, P=purple:STEP #1) Start with one color and keep it in first place, pick a second, keep it in second place, pick a third and keep it in third place. Now, plot all the combinations with the last two colors:ROYBP, ROYPB (2)STEP #2)Now stick with the same first two colors and replot all remaining combinations:ROBYP, ROBPY, ROPBY, ROPYB (4...for a running total of 6)STEP #3) Now stick with the first color and pick a new second color:RB, Now pick a third and plot all combinations:RBYOP, RBYPO (2...running total 8)Now repeat STEP#2:RBPOY, RBPYO, RBOYP, RBOPY (4...running total 12)Now repeat STEP#3:RY, Now pick a third and plot all combinations:RYBOP, RYBPO, (total 14)Now repeat STEP#2:RYPOB, RYPBO, RYOBP, RYOPB (total 18)Now repeat STEP#3: (remember, we have done RO,RB andRY) RP, Now pick a third and plot all combinations:RPOYB, RPOBY (running total 20)Now repeat STEP#2: RPBOY, RPBYO, RPYBO, RPYOB (running total 24) - - -We have now completed all possible combinations with 'R' as the first place pick. Now pick a different color and repeat everything we did above with the new color in place. This will yield 24 new combinations. Do this for each of the remaining colors and 24 combinations will be the outcome for each color when it is used in first place. (24 combinations x 5 colors = 120) and then you will have your 120 combinations.Good Luck. Just be methodical and careful to not repeat the same combo twice and you should be all set.
