Physics Homework Help!!?!?!?

If you could explain how to do this is will greatly help! thanks Pete is designing a voltage divider using a 12-volt battery and a 100-ohm resistor as R.b. What resistor should be used as R.a. if the output voltage across R.b. is to be 4 volts?

We can write for a voltage divider:Vo = Vbatt * Ra/(Ra+Rb)since the current through resistors in series is the same for each resistor. Solving,Vo/Vbatt = Ra/(Ra+Rb)4V/12V = Ra/(Ra + 100) = 1/33*Ra = Ra + 1002*Ra = 100Ra = 50 ohmsTo check:Vo = Vbatt * Ra/(Ra+Rb)Vo = 12V * 50/(50+100) = 12V* (50/150) = 4V

Physics Homework Help!!?!?!?

I think:for every 2 volts that go through the Ra path, one will go through the Rb path.So the Ra path has to be twice as easy to get through than the Rb path.So the resistance has to be half. that of the other option. So the Ra resistance would be 50 I think. But it's been a long time ; )
