I need help with my history homework?

How did the early settlers of the west move? and why did the early settlers follow the rivers?

they moved because the land was barren or were being threatened by outside force (Indians, animals, disease). They followed the rivers so they would have a supply of water and so when they found land they could farm they could create irrigation systems.
