What do I have to study for a career in infectious disease?

I am really interested in a career in some sort of medical profession. More specifically I would like to be involved in the infection disease subspecialty (diagnosis, treatment, etc). I am almost certain I have to go to medical school but I don't really know what I have to study...Pathology, internal medicine...? Any input would be helpful
