| Ankle Injury Question?
I sprained my ankle yesterday from running. I am no stranger to ankle injuries, I experienced a slight ankle fracture from ice skating almost 2 years ago. That time I was injured, I couldn't put pressure on my bad ankle for about a two weeks and I experienced terrible swelling on my foot and ankle. This time, I can put pressure on my ankle and stumble for short distances, yet the swelling is just as bad as last time. I have gone to the doctor and have had an x-ray, they told me that it's only a sprain, but the swelling looks serious. They didn't however give me any sort of recovery date. Last time I recovered within a month. SO MY QUESTION IS, HOW LONG DO YOU THINK IT WILL TAKE ME TO RECOVER NOW |

With ankle injuries it all depends on exactly what is injured. My mother in law rolled her ankle and she had a lot of swelling. She had strained the tendons on the top and side of her foot. It looked like she had a soft ball on the side of her foot. I took her about three months to recover 100%. To recover sooner I would suggest resting it as much as possible(She was very stubborn and wouldn't use cruches and rest like she should have). That along with low impact stretching should shorten the recovery time.

It depends on the severity of the injury. It's sounding to me like it's a grade 2 sprain, as you have pretty intense swelling, but you are still able to walk short distances. It takes a while to rehabilitate ankle injuries. They can become lifelong pests if not rehabbed properly. So for now, keep icing it and move it in your pain tolerance. Worst thing you can do is immobilize it. Just move it up and down, side to side, very small movements as pain allows to keep the joint moving. You should probably go get some physiotherapy where they will give you exercises to strengthen the joint, but also improve its proprioception (body awareness in space)... which is why sprains are usually recurrent. Next time you roll over on your ankle if you aren't properly rehabbed, we reflexively adjust the ankle to avoid injury. But after a sprain, this mechanism is lost (unless you take the time to work on it). Hope this makes sense. But def give your self at least a month, to be honest probably more. Hope you feel better soon. |
