Back injury from heavy lifting, how do i treat it?

I was lifting a 10 gallon cooler out of a sink when i wrenched my back, yes in hindsight i was an idiot, but i dont know what to do now, the area around my left shoulderblade is really sore, im a healthy 18 year old male so I am really annoyed with an injury that I would normally relate to "old people", anyway what do i do? i go to the gym regularly but i am worried that if i just ignore the pain i will somehow to more damage.

In simple language your back is out. See a chiropractor, learn how to lift correctly and expect the injured area to be more susceptible to re-injury unless you do some specific physical therapy to restrengthen the muscles. You may also have sprained tendons which take a long time to heal. In the mean time alternating hot and cold packs to the area and Ibu or Tylenol for pain and swelling.
