Question about playing basketball with an back injury?

I had a herniated disc for about 6 months. The last time I played ball was sometime last year in the summer. Its a warm day outside and I wanna go play basketball.I live in nyc and it really hasnt been warm that lately.
Will be ok for me to play basketball?I actually have no idea when this is gonna heal,it could be years from now.Im actually doing physical therapy for my back now. They told me they wouldnt recommend me to do play ball but if I do it,make sure I do the back and scretching exericses.
Is it safe for me to play ball?has anybody played ball with a herniated disc?I also have a back brace that I plan on wearing if I do play basketball

Sounds like you are going to take the proper precautions if you do play. I don't recommend dunking or getting to competitive. As a college athlete I've forced myself to play with sprains, fractures, pulled muscles, ect.. sometimes regretably so but never a herniated disc. It might not be worth the risk if it isn't fully healed but you should be active and really push that physical therapy. I have a torn MCL right now so I know it hurts to sacrifice a good day of sport but for future days of sport it may be best to sit this one out.
