meeting the needs of a student with traumatic brain injury?

I recently acquired a student with a traumatic brain injury. What can I do to help meet her learning needs?

SPED Teacher has a spectacular aura about
If the student has a traumatic brain injury, they should have an IEP that outlines their educational needs and modifications and accommodations that they require. If you do not have access to this document, talk to your building principal, special education teacher or special education director and request this information. You could also request a meeting with the special education teacher if you are a general education teacher. Each student with a TBI is so different. Some very general suggestions are tape record class discussions for the student to refer to or have an outline of any lectures that are given to help the student follow along. Processing and short term memory are sometimes problematic for students with TBIs. Ask the student what help she needs if she is older or talk to her parents for suggestions. It is really most critical that you get a copy of the IEP to determine what she really needs. After you have worked with her, you will also be able to determine better what she needs.

Now why the heck are you asking that on here? You make a child sound like a machine , for frig sakes. WE DON'T KNOW THE KID!!! How are we suppost to know how to teach her?

(sigh) Sorry, this is sort of a sore subject with me. My sister has brain damage, and I'm sick and tired of people looking at her like she's crazy. But really, I can't tell you anything with the information you've given me. How bad is she? Does she have speech /hearing/ speaking problems? Stuff like that. I'm pretty much an expert on this subject, so if you want to, email me.
