Recommendations on insurance for puppies/dogs?

I'm totally new to this and would like to get recommendations from pet parents and vets out here on medical insurance and any other kind of insurance that applies to dogs? If you can also tell me how much it usually costs, that'd be great!

i go through banfield at petsmart. they have a wellness program that is $22/mo. the initial set up is about $100, but you get free office visits, free spay/neuter, and discounted prices on medicines. i recommend it to anyone. the people there are great too.

I think it's usually a break-even scenario for most pet owners -- there's no real reason to get it.

I have insurance on one of my dogs. If you have any reason to believe that they were not well bred dogs (got them from a shelter, puppy mill, pet store, or backyard breeder), I would recommend getting insurance. I am glad that I had it for her, as she was diagnosed with luxating patellas and the insurance will cover about $1200 of her $4400 surgery.

I have VPI insurance... and it costs me between $240-$350 a year for it. It's slightly cheaper if you pay it annually rather than monthly. It is also cheaper if you don't get the vaccination coverage (includes some reimbursement for spay/neuter, heartworm and flea preventatives, etc). I got it for her when she was a puppy, but will not be renewing that part of the insurance this year as it will only end up saving me around $10.
