I work for an independent agent in Texas, so I can't help you in particular in Florida, but I recommend that you shop around for a GOOD customer-service-oriented independent agent in Florida who represents several companies and is hungry enough for your business to help you find the best deal for your particular set of circumstances. Look for a smaller office/smaller staff and younger primary agent who hasn't yet built up a huge book of business and gotten lazy, yet seems to be competent and knowledgeable of particular concerns in Florida (hurricanes, etc.)
Combine what I'm telling you with other responses you get on here from Floiridians to find an agent who represents the carrier (brand) of insurance that sounds like the best.
You are right to combine home and auto; you will likely get a discount on both for having what they call "companion policies". Some auto-only insurance companies claim to save you a bunch on car insurance, but if you move away from your carrier who currently has both, they may raise the home policy premium and offset any savings you would gain.
