What is the best way to invest money short term and long term? A CD?

What is the best way to invest money short term and long term? A CD?

Money Market? With whom in invest? My wife is set to inherit 100K in the next year. We are going to use most of it towards a new house, but I am interested in using the money to make more money.

I'm interested in two things really.

1. Let's say of the 100K we keep ten to make house repairs. What safest and smartest to do with the other 90K for a year unitl we are ready to buy?

2. Let's say of the 90K left we want to use 10K for investing, what is the best route to go there?
