Are spanish people a completely different thing to latin american people?

I'm asking this b'cos my spanish friend at school keeps refering to himself as a "latino", but I keep telling him he's not one (as much as he wants to be), becos spanish people are european and white, meaning that they are completely different to South American and Mexican people, right? Furthermore, the bloke keeps saying to me we're "latino brothers", and I keep saying it, on and on, "your not f***ing latino, ur spanish so shut up" ONE MORE THIIIIIING - who came up with reggaeton anyway, the latinos or the spanish?!
