| With Japanese names, does the first name come first?
...or does the first name appear after the family name (like Chinese). for example, which is the family name in this name (as it appears in a publication) : Matsuzaki Yahachiro

The family name comes first, so I think "Yahachiro" it's the name of the person. In Japan, people call each other with their family name, at work and at school. At school: A male adressing a girl will rarely use her first name, unless they are childhood friend,or she's his girlfriend, while two males usually call each other with their first name after a short period of time. Two girls call each other with the first name from the first moment they meet, because they want to be called by their first names and they will ask for it,usually (but not always) At work : two adults at work should use their family name, but,if they know each other well, they can use their first name OUTSIDE , when they're not working. A foreigners should pay attention : if he says his first name first when he meets someone for the first time, he will always be called by his first name, because everyone will think it is his family name ^^ |
