japanese does not have tones. chinese characters have one reading and 4 tones. japanese characters have lots of reading and no tone. i think chinese is more difficult than japanese. i studied lots of chinese literature and can read. but i cannot speak chinese because of tones. its really hard for me. japanese is much easier if you have no problem with characters. you already answered your questions i think. you said you have no interest in japanese. if you dont have interest in japanese culture or anime or something, you cannot master even japanese. i think you better study chinese. no offense this is my honest opinion |

| Japanese or Chinese?
I have an interest to learn Mandarin but I think I might have difficulty understanding the differences in tones when spoken to and when speaking. Does Japanese have tones? If so, how many? If someone is fortunate enough to know/study both and speak English as a first language, could you tell me which you find easier? I don't have the interest in Japanese but I would learn as much as I could if it is SIGNIFICANTLY easier (which I doubt). Characters don't bother me because I can just associate them with English words and learn the Mandarin words after the character. Honest opinions please! |

I think Japanese is the easiest one coz chinese has so much tones the is really difficult to know them all and it is also difficult to learn to write it. Japanese is the best one coz the grammar is simplier and has also less characte then chinese! |

I grew up as a Spanish-American. I then taught myself to speak and write in French, Italian, and Portuguese. Currently I am learning to speak japanese and comes to me quite well. It had taken me 4 years to master French, Italian, and Portuguese, because I learned them simultaneously. 1 year ago, when I was fourteen, I mad a choice to learn japanese because it was more useful for me and the characters were easier. I think there are only two tones but I don't know. I think it more depends on the respect level of what you say,( for example, boss, friend, child). :-) |
