Does anyone knows how many languages are there in this world, and how many dialects??

Also, which is the most commonly used language? Which is the most preferred language? Which is the funniest language? And finally, which is the hardest language to understand?

There are about 9000 languages spoken in the world; around an eighth of them - about 1100 - are spoken on one island (Papua New Guinea).

Counting dialects would be an almost impossible quest, not least because no one can actually agree what constitutes a dialect rather than a language or simply a regional accent.

The standards organisations recognise 486 distinct languages, there are lots of dialects. To see which language goes with which country, I can recommend the CIA factbook.

Obviously Queens English is the preferred language, Welsh is the sexiest, see Ruth Madoc link below or Tom Jones. The funniest is Belgian and the hardest to understand is the American Accent, it sounds like English but all the words are wrong.

The one language that I think I should learn is sign language.
